abstract

background and objectives: human t-cell lymphotropic viruses (htlv) type 1 and 2 are retroviruses that share the same routes of transmission as human immunodeficiency virus (hiv). as a consequence of epidemiologic similarities, hiv and htlv-1/2 co-infection is frequent. due to the limited data, this study assessed the seroprevalence of htlv-1/2 infections in hiv infected patients in tehran, iran. materials and methods: this case-control study was carried out in 180 hiv infected patients from iranian hiv/aids research center in tehran and 117 matched healthy controls. the serum samples were checked with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) for anti htlv-1/2. results: a total of 180 hiv positive patients with mean age 36.9±9.2 years and 117 matched controls were enrolled in the study. all cases and controls were negative for htlv-1/2 infection. conclusion: htlv-1/2 infection is negligible in hiv infected patients in tehran, iran, although intravenous drug use is the most common route of hiv transmission in our study subjects.

Evaluating the Frequency of Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 Infection in Iranian Population

Background: Human T-cell lymphotropic viruses 1 (HTLV1) is endemic in specific regions. We aimed to determine the prevalence of HTLV I infection among blood donors in southeast Iran.   Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2005 and March 2015. Sera were collected from blood donors and were tested for the presence of HTLV1 specific antibody using ELISA. Reactive sample...

The Enigma of Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type-1 (HTLV-1) Infection in Iran

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) was the first human retrovirus associated with malignancy.  The prevalence of HTLV-I infection varies significantly in different regions of the world.  In this study, the prevalence of HTLV-I infection among ethnic Jews living in Shiraz, South of Iran, was investigated. 286 blood samples were obtained.  HTLV-1 antibody assay on serum samples was d...

Awareness of laboratory students of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences about human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)

Introduction: HTLV-1 virus is a human retrovirus and it causes several chronic diseases. So far, there is not any vaccine or satisfactory treatment that has been developed for infections caused by this virus. Moreover, the best way to control the infection is prevention and the best way to prevent it is education. Therefore, our study was conducted to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of ...

[The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)].

Human T-cell Lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus described. Some time after its discovery a group of diseases were related to this virus, such as, adult T-cell leukemia lymphoma (ATLL), HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and HTLV-1 associated uveitis (HAU). In the nineties, HTLV-1 was associated to a severe eczema of children, calle...
